I’ve read this twitter post today and was curious, if this technique is possible in Blender, too.
So I started a quick experiment to make some tests. Below you see the result I got after 30 minutes. It is not really the same, but works similar.
The terrain plane itself has displacement modifiers and I use bitmap textures for the structure. The displacement heights is driven by empties. The displacement texture size and position are controlled by the same empties, too. The setup for the displacement isn’t that complex. More complex is the shader for the mountains, but actually I’ve used just basics.
I will prepare a small making of video, that goes into detail. Until then you can download the .blend file for free and take a look yourself.
